JFR Notes - Tony

From November 1996 reunion in Phoenix

Tony's Family Story for 1996
I'm not sure this is what you are looking for in a JFR story but I still like this one quite well.

A year and a half ago I had the opportunity to meet Grant in Germany while he was working there. One day we went to see the cathedral at Köln. The following is an event as described by Grant and transcribed by yours truly.

So we are just standing in the cathedral looking at the windows when a guy comes up from out of nowhere. He is perhaps 80 to 85 years old. He asked me if I spoke German. I said "no, English" but he was very instant that we understand. He phrased things several ways to be sure.

He told us that the pillars of the cathedral were knocked to their foundations (during the war).

He spent 4 years as a Russian P.O.W. (Either during his time as a soldier or as a prisoner, he was shot in the face and he showed us the entrance wound in the cheek and exit wound in the back of his neck.) The bullet wound made it possible to reach into his head. He was in Siberia during the war and it was colder than Alaska.

He made a big point of letting us know that out of 80 million Germans, he said only 11 million were Nazis. He seemed to like Americans.

He told us the story, I saw him take 3 steps away and I looked away for a second, turned back around and he was gone. That was the strangest part of the whole thing. He vanished so quickly it made me think of the three Nephites.
